"US-China Nuclear Rivalry and the Taiwan Question"
For many decades, the U.S.-China nuclear balance had no particular consequence, and was overshadowed by acute crises, such as nuclear proliferation in North Korea or potentially in Iran. However, in the last five years, nuclear tensions between the U.S. and China have accelerated dramatically. This presentation will summarize and assess thinking on both sides of the Pacific regarding the current state of this new superpower nuclear rivalry. It will put a particular spotlight on a new set of recommendations by American strategists during 2023-24 that call for, not only a major U.S. nuclear forces overhaul and buildup, but also the hardening of base facilities in the Asia-Pacific in preparation for possible nuclear war-fighting scenarios.
Lyle Goldstein
Lyle J. Goldstein is the Director of the China Initiative and Visiting Professor at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University. At Brown, he is investigating the costs of great power competition with both China and Russia in association with the Costs of War Project at Watson. Goldstein serves concurrently as Director of Asia Engagement at the Washington think-tank Defense Priorities, which advocates for realism and restraint in U.S. defense policy. He has written or edited seven books on Chinese strategy and continues to work on a book length project that examines the nature of China-Russia relations in the 21st century.
